Liz' Handmade Christmas
Christmas is a magical time, when we exchange gifts with our loved ones and spend time with our families; however, the media seems to pressurise us into thinking that the more money we spend, the more it shows that we care.
As we all know, this is not the case—our loved ones would not want us to spend big and get into financial difficulties. I have always made cards and presents for Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries and so on, and now if I bought my father a birthday card instead of making him one, he would be really disappointed! People really do appreciate the personal touch of a handmade gift, it says: “I have thought about this person and I have spent time and energy making them something unique.”
You really don’t need to be artistic or be able to draw to make cards, all you need is a bit of imagination, time and blank cards (which can be purchased cheaply in shops and online). The internet is a wonderful source of inspiration and has endless examples of homemade cards and gifts.
My eldest daughter decided to make her cards last year using nothing more than acrylic paint and a large potato, creating potato-printed Christmas trees and sticking on a sequin star at the top of the tree—they looked beautiful. One tip to make your handmade cards is to put a small emoji on the back of the card and sign it saying handmade with love, it is a nice professional finishing touch.
Whilst working as PA to Mark Simms I was initially nervous about giving him my handmade gifts for Christmas and occasions! However I have to say he really liked the odd array of handmade gifts I gave to him, from a clock made out of an old book to an apron made out of a pair of jeans and braces to the mini-me Mark Simms rag doll made out of scraps of fabric.
Please feel free to contact me if you want any ideas on handmade gifts and I will gladly share some ideas I have.
Whatever you do, be safe, be happy and have a wonderful Christmas.
