Boot camp

From P3 Operations Manager Henry Webster

Fitness boot camps offer the opportunity to build both strength and endurance. Their workouts are modelled on old-school military training, building strength, endurance and agility. They generally include an intense mix of aerobic, strength training and speed elements within each class session. In most cases, you can expect to do bursts of intense activity alternated with intervals of lighter activity, as well as drills and sprints.

Here, Henry talks about his own experiences and what to expect when you march into boot camp! But are you up to the challenge?

Boot camp fit Henry

“When I was made redundant from my previous role, in 2016, I felt a little lost, depressed, overweight, and rapidly inching towards 50. Thankfully, I took some action and joined a local Army style ‘Boot Camp’. This was run by an ex-marine called Lee and he introduced me again to the pain that is exercise!

“Boot camp consists of three sessions a week at a local school and runs in all weathers. We complete circuits that focus on strength, core and cardiovascular (CV) exercises. This includes the joys of press ups, burpees, planks, and plenty of running in between. It’s fair to say that this has benefited me in my overall fitness and it’s also a great way to unwind from the day at work!

“I’ve also more recently joined a Villa Fit, which is a 12-week fitness and nutrition programme based at Villa Park. It’s for men with a BMI of over 25 and so I qualified!!!!

“I have had the pleasure of spending time with other Villa fans talking about getting fitter, eating and drinking more healthily. I also managed to get a quick kick about on the pitch and managed to miss a penalty (minus a goalkeeper). Perhaps I can play for England soon?!”
