My name is Heidi Gibbins and I am a Support Worker in Peterborough.
I am lucky to live somewhere with a garden, and during last year and present with the challenges of lockdown and looking after elderly parents, one whom has dementia, growing things has been a great help for my mental health.
I have an interest in cooking and have always had an interest in growing in the garden or in pots. Last year I decided to dig a plot of land for growing more vegetables. There was that fear at the beginning of lockdown about shops running out of food so I thought, let’s try living off the land.
I planted cabbage, Brussels sprouts, carrots, leeks … some grew and some did not, due to greedy cabbage white butterflies. I also bought some little kale plants and if you trim it, kale just keeps going; these have not stopped growing all winter.
I have found it a challenge and a learning process, but it’s amazing when you grow and eat your own produce. I am quite experimental with my cooking anyway and I love herbs, although you’re usually better off just buying the plants and planting them in the ground rather than growing from seed. When I planted some sage last year, it went everywhere and grew to three foot by three foot so I picked some bunches to put out front and told the neighbours to help themselves!
At the beginning of the year, I was given a plastic green house from a lovely neighbour so now I’ve secured it to stop it blowing over the fence, this means I can try planting things like tomatoes and aubergines this spring. I have started sowing lots of seeds in hope of a good selection of produce and am also trying new things like garlic.
So, if you have a garden or not, get a pot and start planting as it makes you feel good 😊.
Have a chilled weekend and enjoy this week’s blog.
