Dear all,
When it comes to sex and relationships, consent is still seen as a ‘difficult’ issue. ‘Difficult’ to teach in the classroom, ‘difficult’ to raise in the workplace and even ‘difficult’ to discuss in our own personal relationships.
But it shouldn’t be that way. For Sexual Health Week 2021, we want to be part of normalising conversations about consent and empowering people to talk about it positively and proactively.
We want to make sure everyone gets consent and we want to have those important conversations in our services and with the adults and young people we work alongside.
This week’s blog looks into these themes as well as candidly discussing the pain and process of coming to terms with sexual abuse.
Derbyshire Mental Health Helpline Triage Worker Emma Johnson talks about being a survivor, openly describing the incredibly difficult experiences she has overcome, and how she found the strength to move forwards in her life and offer support for other people who are coming to terms with similar traumatic experiences.
“For me when a person calls up and discloses any kind of assault or abuse, I will always provide encouragement for them disclosing and be supportive throughout, I will allow the caller to talk as much or as little as they want. I will also provide them with services that specialise in this area to help them with the next step. One thing I will always reassure the caller about is that there is no right or wrong way to react to the abuse or assault as we are all different. I also reassure the person that it was never their fault.”
Thank you for reading, we hope you find this week’s blog informative and useful.
